Restoring The Peace in Medellin, Colombia

This month, we would like to dive deeper into one city in particular that has been affected and that is Medellin. For those who may not know, Medellin is the second-largest city in Colombia. When it comes to poverty and unemployment in Medellin, the city has been through a lot of changes over the years. Restoring The Peace will be working with different organizations based in the heart of Medellin in order to provide resources, job opportunities, and other basic necessities to those in need. Poverty in Colombia

Now, while Colombia is still a beautiful country that has a landscape marked by rainforests, the Andes mountains, and a plethora of coffee plantations, poverty and inequality have been two major issues in Colombia over the past few years. In fact, in 2018, there was a big increase in the poverty level that saw about 346 children die of hunger in that year alone all while the three richest men in the country reportedly owned more than ten percent of the country’s GDP. Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic, matters have become even worse and the lack of support from the government has sparked demonstrators to take to the streets to protest. Restoring The Peace & M.A.T.T.

One of the leading causes of spinal cord injury in Colombia is violence and this is also closely linked to lack of education and a scarcity of social opportunities. M.A.T.T. (Movilidad, Accesibilidad, Tiempo, Trabajo in English translates to Mobility, Accessibility, Time, Work) which was created with the intention to provide those types of opportunities, especially to those suffering from disabilities. Their goal is to promote the independence of those with all types of disabilities which would enable them to make more positive decisions and regain control of their life. Together For Change

This month, Restoring the Peace’s shirt proceeds will be donated to NuevaLife Foundation which is a non-profit organization based in Miami, Florida that has been working hard to positively impact South American communities. They are in 11 communities currently with their population focus being the Indigenous Wayuu community of La Guajira, Colombia. For over a decade, they have focused their efforts through three pillars: Education, Water & Energy, and Paw Support. Their Education pillar is focused on providing quality education and a proper infrastructure for learning to the youth in order to give them the tools they require to redirect their lives into whatever they want.
